Stephen M. Mills, 35, of Fort Worth, Tex., was reportedly the leader of the Navy SEAL team killed in the Chinook helicopter attack on Aug. 6. Mills, a 13-year veteran of the military, leaves behind a wife and 1-year-old son. "He loved his country, and he felt like what he was doing was right," his mother, Cheryl Mills, told the Dallas Morning News.

EW1(SW) Kevin Rux. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on October 24, 1988, and completed basic training at NTC Orlando, Florida, in December 1988. Rux next attended Electronic Warfare A School at NAS Pensacola, Florida, and at Naval Station Charleston, South Carolina, from December 1988 to June 1989, followed by service as an Electronic Warfare Technician aboard the guided-missile frigate USS Taylor (FFG-50) from July 1989 to January 1991. EW3 Rux attended additional Electronic Warfare training at Corry Station Naval Technical Training Center in Pensacola, Florida, from January to September 1991, and then served as an Electronic Warfare Technician aboard the destroyer USS Deyo (DD-989) from October 1991 to October 1994. Petty Officer Rux then changed career fields and attended Master at Arms A School at Lackland AFB, Texas, from November to December 1994. His next assignment was with Submarine Base Security at Naval Submarine Base New London, Connecticut, from January 1995 until he left active duty on January 9, 1998. After leaving the Navy, Kevin worked as a police officer for a short time before reenlisting in the Navy in 1999.

After receiving training in his first career field of Electronic Warfare, Petty Officer Rux served as an Electronic Warfare Technician aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG-67), and was killed aboard the ship when muslim terrorists exploded a bomb next to the ship while at anchor in Aden, Yemen, on October 12, 2000. Although he was buried at sea, there is a cenotaph for Kevin Rux at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton, West Virginia.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Michael A. CathcartDied November 14, 2014 Serving During Operation Enduring Freedom

31, of Bay City, Mich., died Nov. 14, in Kunduz Province, Afghanistan, of wounds caused by small-arms fire while on dismounted patrol. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C.

BAY CITY, Mich. — A 31-year-old Green Beret from Bay City who served two tours of duty in Iraq has been killed fighting in Afghanistan, according to the Pentagon.

Sgt. 1st Class Michael A. Cathcart died of wounds received from small arms fire during dismounted combat operations in Kunduz Province on Friday, the Defense Department said.

Cathcart was a Bay City Central High School graduate and enlisted in the Army in 2001, The Bay City Times reported.

Cathcart was part of the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

His battalion commander, Lt. Col. Michael Sullivan, said in an email that the unit known as the "Bushmen" had "lost one of our nation's finest." Cathcart "died a true warrior with his fellow teammates at his side," Sullivan wrote.

"The Bushmen will always remember Mike's love for the hockey rink and his contagious smile," said Sullivan. "My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Mike in the coming days, weeks, and months ahead."

Cathcart served in Iraq in 2003 and 2005 and volunteered for Special Forces in 2007, according to a statement from Fort Bragg. He joined the 3rd Special Forces Group in 2009 as an engineer.

His many awards include three Bronze Star Medals, the Purple Heart Medal and four Army Commendation Medals, the statement said.

Cathcart's body was being transported from Germany to Dover, Delaware, Air Force Base, to be met by his mother, Jeanne Cathcart, and his sister, Trishia. A memorial service likely will take place at Fort Bragg, with a service in Bay City to follow, his mother told the newspaper. Arrangements had not yet been completed Sunday.

Cathcart came from a military heritage, his family said. His uncle, Steven Cathcart, served in the Army during the first Gulf War, and his grandfather, Mike Cathcart, served in the Army in the 1950s and 1960s.

Army Staff Sgt. Alexander ConradDied June 8, 2018 Serving During U.S. Africa Command Operations

26, of Chandler, Arizona, died June 8 in Somalia of injuries sustained from enemy indirect fire. The incident is under investigation. Conrad was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The Pentagon on Saturday released the name of the special operations soldier killed in an attack in Somalia.

Staff Sgt. Alexander Conrad, 26, was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group. He was killed by enemy indirect fire, according to the Pentagon announcement.

Conrad was supporting Operation Octave Shield, according to the Pentagon.

Four other U.S. troops and one partner force member were wounded in the Friday attack.

U.S. Africa Command on Saturday said the wounded Americans were treated and discharged and were under the care of the U.S. Embassy Medical Team in Kenya as they awaited transportation for additional medical evaluation.

The attack took place about 2:45 p.m. local time Friday in Jubaland, Somalia, when the troops came under mortar and small-arms fire from al-Shabab militants, AFRICOM said.

About 800 Somali and Kenyan forces, with support from U.S. troops, were conducting a multi-day operation about 220 miles southwest of Mogadishu when the attack occurred, AFRICOM said.

Their goal was to “clear al-Shabab from contested areas, liberate villages from al-Shabab control, and establish a permanent combat outpost designed to increase the span of Federal Government of Somalia security and governance,” AFRICOM said in its statement.

The U.S. troops were providing advice, assistance and aerial surveillance during the mission.

Born in Mesa, Arizona, Conrad joined the Army in June 2010, according to information from U.S. Army Special Operations Command. After completing initial training, he was stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, as a human intelligence collector.

While stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Conrad deployed to Afghanistan twice in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

He later completed the French Basic Language Course at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in 2016, and was subsequently assigned to 3rd Special Forces Group as a human intelligence noncommissioned officer, according to USASOC.

His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Unit Commendation (second award), the Army Commendation Medal (third award), the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal (second award), the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Combat Action Badge, and the Basic Parachutist Badge.

He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Meritorious Service Medal.

This is at least the second deadly attack on soldiers from 3rd Special Forces Group in Africa over the past year.

In October, four soldiers from the unit were killed in a deadly ambush in Niger.

The group from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, began shifting its area of operations to Africa in the fall of 2015 as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan wound down.

Originally activated in 1963 with a Middle East and Africa focus, soldiers from 3rd Group deployed almost constantly to Afghanistan and, to a lesser extent, Iraq throughout the height of those wars. The transition back to Africa came as demands and operations changed, commanders said at the time.
